Texas Quiz Bowl Classes are lead by Dr. Christopher Romero who has 30 years of quiz bowl experience and is an expert in cognitive learning theories and academic competition pedagogy. We also feature a group of subject-matter experts, including a biochemist cancer researcher and two Ph.D. candidates in history, to explain the intricacies of the subject matter.

Tossup Sessions will be similar to what students have seen in our previous semester classes. The tossup classes will be primarily focused on general listening skills and clue knowledge accumulation. We will read tossups for the group and students will be able to buzz a limited number of times each session. After each correct answer, TQBA subject experts will discuss the clues and cognitive strategies appropriate for that question. We will give students tips on what to write down and try to remember so that they may buzz fast on future questions on similar topics. Tossup sessions are suggested for all beginning players.

Bonus Sessions will focus on thinking and guessing strategies for getting more correct answers. While clue knowledge will be featured in the bonus sessions, this aspect of learning will be deemphasized so that we can instruct students more directly on honing their specific listening skills and using both personal and team strategies for how to guess in different scenarios. In this sense, Bonus Sessions can be viewed as an intermediate class, between the tossups class and the advanced class. Bonus sessions are suggested for all players who are comfortable with the tossup sessions and hope to improve more rapidly.
