Texas Quiz Bowl Rules & Policies

Rosters

  • At the time of registration, coaches will be required to submit rosters. Rosters may be changed anytime until tournament day registration.
  • Texas Quiz Bowl reserves the right to verify the status of any participant with the school's principal.

Canceling Registration

  • Schools that wish to cancel their attendance to an event should do so by 5 p.m. two days prior to an event.
  • Schools that cancel less than two days prior to an event will be assessed a $20 penalty. This penalty is due prior to the school's future participation.
  • Schools that fail to appear at a tournament without canceling shall be assessed a $50 penalty. This penalty is due prior to the school's future participation.

Varsity Eligibility

  • Any team of students who are enrolled for the current academic year at the same accredited  diploma granting entity are eligible to compete in TQBA Academic Competitions. 

  • For the state championship tournament, only teams from accredited entities in the state of Texas are eligible to compete. (i.e. For all other TQBA events, teams from any state may participate)

  • A student is not limited in the number of years he or she may participate in TQBA events 

  • 7th and 8th graders are eligible to participate in high school academic competition  if: 

    • they attend a diploma granting entity 

  • Students who attend non-diploma granting 9th and 10th grade feeder entities to a diploma granting entity are eligible to participate with the diploma granting entity if: 

    • the non-granting entity feeds exclusively into the granting entity

    • documentation of the situation is provided to the executive director prior to the student's competing in his or her first event of the year

  • An individual student may represent one and only one entity during a particular tournament.

Junior Varsity Eligibility

  • Any team of students who are enrolled for the current academic year at the same accredited  entity are eligible to compete in TQBA Junior Varsity events if: 

    • the sum of their grade levels is less than or equal to 40. 

Middle School Eligibility

  • Any team of students who are enrolled for the current academic year at the same accredited  entity are eligible to compete in TQBA Middle School events if: 

    • no team member has advanced beyond the 8th grade. 

Match Formats

  • All TQBA matches shall be contested using one of two match formats: 
    • TQBA format -- 3 Periods: 12 Toss-ups, 60 second round, 10 Toss-ups/Bonus
    • NAQT format -- 2 Periods of 10 Toss-ups/Bonus
  • There is no formal recognition; students should make sure that his/her light is lit before answering.
  • At the end of each round, player substitutions may be made. 
  • If a match ends in a tie, the game will continue in a sudden death toss-up tiebreaker. The first change of score shall determine the outcome. 

TQBA First Period – 12 Toss-ups

  • This period consists of 12 Toss-up questions. 
  • Toss-up questions are marked with a “power mark.” If a player answers correctly before this point, they will earn 15 points.  If the question is answered correctly after this point, it is worth 10 points.  If a player interrupts the question and answers incorrectly, his team will lose 5 points.  Only one team may be penalized on any single question.  There is no penalty for an incorrect response once a question has been completed.
  • Non Verbal Communication among players is allowed. 
  • Verbal Communication of any type is not allowed. 
  • The team of any player who makes any audible sound during a live toss-up without first buzzing shall be penalized five points and forfeit the right to answer.  

TQBA Second Period – 60 Seconds

  • The team behind after the first round will have the first choice in the 60 second round. Should the game be tied, the team that last was behind will choose first.
  • Each team's answers will be given by a single assigned representative. Any of the four players may be chosen. 
  • Each round consists of 10 questions and each team will have 60 seconds to answer all questions.  Moderators will not move on to the next item until given an answer or “PASS.” Once an item has been passed, a team cannot return to it.
  • The team spokesman will at no time be prompted for an answer. 
  • Any portion of questions read but not answered correctly will be offered to the opposing team. The team will be read each question and will have 5 seconds to confer before being prompted for an answer. 
  • After the first 60 second round, the second team will be allowed to choose. All above rules apply.

TQBA Third Period – 10 Toss-ups/Bonus

  • Toss-ups will be played exactly like the first period.
  • Correctly answering a toss-up will earn the right to answer a bonus question.  Though the format of the bonuses varies, each has a maximum value of 30 points. 
  • While the team captain will generally give final answers to bonus questions, he or she may defer to any team member before time has expired.
  • On bonuses with a 30-20-10 or 15-5 format, the team will be allowed to guess after each clue with no penalty.
  • For bonus answers that require listing, the team must give its answer in a continuous fashion.  Any pause will be taken as the end of the answer.
  • Once prompted, a captain MUST answer immediately. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the opportunity to earn points.

NAQT Format

  • If NAQT format is used, two halves using the TQBA third period will be used.
