The genesis of TQBA

          In spring of 1997 at a Chinese restaurant in Houston, the Texas A&M quiz bowl team was celebrating its surprise 2nd place finish at the CBI regional tournament at Rice. Over sub-par Chinese food, the idea of hosting a high school quiz bowl tournament was bandied about. The inaugural Aggie Bowl took place in October 1998 with 17 teams. In March 2000 the A&M group expanded its operations to encompass a spring event (the first NAQT Texas event). Driven by a desire to expand quiz bowl in the areas from which members of the core group originated, in Spring 2002 the group held three NAQT state events: the third Texas edition and the first editions in both Arkansas and Louisiana. In part due to our extraordinary marketing efforts, NAQT awarded the bid for its 2002 National Tournament to Austin and a conglomerated A&M-UT hosting committee. In Fall 2003 TQBA was officially born when the groups from Austin and College Station joined forces with Rice to better its hosting efforts. As of this writing on our 2nd anniversary, the core group has hosted tournaments in 8 different cities (College Station, Houston, Austin, New Orleans, El Paso, West Bauxite, Waco, and the Woodlands) which geometrically enclose an area of over 217,000 square miles.
